We are pleased to announce that "Tellus VPL（α version)" , a parking lot detection tool that automatically detects new parking spaces using satellite data and AI image recognition technology, will be available free of charge as an official Tellus tool starting August 19, 2021.

"Tellus VPL" was researched and developed by 3 companies including us; Ridge-i Inc., a consulting and development company for AI and deep learning technologies, and akippa Inc., which operates the parking reservation application "akippa".

In the background to the development of "Tellus VPL", there was an issue that akippa, Inc. was facing. The company provides a sharing service that allows users to temporarily use a total of 46,000 parking spaces nationwide as of July 2021, including vacant monthly and private parking lots and vacant land. In many cases, the development of new parking spaces involves searching for candidate sites on a map and then having a sales representative visit the site to conduct sales activities, which can be very costly.

"Tellus VPL" will enable them to identify potential sites for new parking lots based on satellite data, which will improve the efficiency of their sales activities in developing new parking lots.

In developing "Tellus VPL", SAKURA internet, Inc., which promotes the development and use of "Tellus", was in charge of planning the project and providing the satellite data, while Ridge-i, inc. developed a program for detecting candidate parking sites from satellite data using machine learning and deep learning techniques.

In preparation for the full-fledged use of "Tellus VPL" in business, akippa, Inc., has started collaborating with parking development partners (agencies) from July 2021.
